Henrietta climbed out of the bathtub, dried herself off, and dressed. Then she told her husband, "You better take me to the doctor. I'm bleeding and it ain't my time."
Showing
This showing scene, grabbed my attention because it shows that Henrietta, knew something was wrong and she also knew right where to look for that something. As women, mothers, and wives, we turn ourselves into the Hindu Goddess Mother Lakshmi, with our daily multitasking in order for the household to run smoothly, kids off to school and in Henrietta's case worrying about what a cheating spouse is bring home. To find time for one's self examination, can lead to you hiding in plain sight as to not cause panic for everyone that is depending on you. In a house filled with people Henrietta, finds this hard lump the size of her pinkie on her cervix. I believe that she knew that this was extremely serious why she ordered her husband to take her to the John Hopkins hospital. A GYN visit is not something that women are excited to endure.
My blood pressure always hits the roof anytime is enter the doctor's office, only this time it didn't because, my exam was done by a former employer and tuned great friend Dr. Katherine Sherif. Kat as I call her, have been named one of the top Doctors in Pennsylvania and the USA for a number of years and she recently accepted a position as co-chair at Jefferson Hospital and she heads the woman health department. On my last visit to the GYN, a small polyp was discovered on my cervices about the size of a small grape. Katherine was immediately able to tell me that is was none cancerous. I owe a huge thanks to the research done on HeLa cells.
In the next building, under an elegant domed copper roof, a ten-and-a-half-foot marble statue of Jesus stood, arms spread wide, holding court over what was once the main entrance of Hopkins. No one in Henrietta's family ever saw a Hopkins doctor without visiting the Jesus statue, laying flowers at his feet, saying a prayer, and rubbing his big toe for good luck. But that day Henrietta didn't stop.
Telling
In this tell scene, helped me to realize that Henrietta came from a family, that did have a strong faith in God. On this particular occasion Henrietta faith, though as small as a mustard seed was not lacking but, was placed in the hands of the doctor whom God had created and given the knowglede wisdom and understaning. He would be able to at a human perspective by physical touch and verbal confirmation.
